1950s Standard 10 Companion - a VERY rare British classic car!
Standard Companion Estate - 1957
This Standard Companion Estate from 1957 is based on the Standard 10 and was introduced in 1954, the companion might be lesser spotted than say the 8 or the 10 at a classic car show and even this rally today, but they did actually outlive both the 8 and the 10; with the 8 and 10 ending production in 1959 and the Companion marching solidly on until 1961 when it was replaced by the Herald Estate.
First of all, lets talk capacity - because if you were going to step up from the faithful Standard 10, what could you expect to gain?
The load capacity of the car is described in hundredweights, but I wanted to give it you at home in simpler terms to perhaps show off ...

Hillman Super Minx mk3 This car is sadly a much rarer sight that it should be, because even back in the mid 60s when this was a gleaming bright penny in a row of new cars, it looked smart, attractive and modern. It deserves to be far more treasured in today’s line up of classics and hopefully today’s video will have you lusting after one just as much as I now am! For those watching from abroad ...

    What a gorgeous automobile 🇬🇧👍 I don't remember these on New Zealand roads as a kid, however there were some Standard 10 sedans around, don't know if NZ had the Standard 8. See she has a dashboard mounted rear vision mirror, that was also a feature of US Chryslers from that era.

    Gorgeous car, interesting review but I don't think you really 'got' the car. In the early 80s, I had a 2600 SD1 for 5 years. The driving experience was second to none and both my wife and I loved it! Ferrari Daytona-esque styling, fabulously comfortable seats, steerring wheel with good range of adjustment in out as well as up down. A great space between driver and front passenger. Never had any issue with the handbrake or choke lever as they easily fell to hand. Performance was decent, headlights at night were wonderful esp on dark country roads when returning late from concerts! First time I reversed, I turned my head to look out of the rear window and couldn't believe how big the car was! On the downside mine was a Friday 13th car; the body was rusting away and the head gasket kept blowing. It had 2 resprays, on the 2nd I had Non OE front chin spoiler with splitter and a rear tailgate spoiler fitted and coloured the same as the same. I thought it looked great and often when filling up guys would come over and say it was the best SD1 in town. Eventually the car had a recon head fitted but when it started playing up again the money pit sadly had to go. I had previously driven Rover 100s, P5s, P6s and enjoyed them all but the style of the SD1 was a quantum leap forward. If ever I drove even a P6 again, it felt so "sit up and beg" by comparison. Anyway, really enjoyed seeing this one, thanks for posting.

    For reasons I wont go into I had to delay watching this video until now. I am so glad I watched it at last! The standard brand is somewhat overlooked I think but just looking at these examples you know that they are cherished. That was an interesting story of William Lyons, I knew his history but to have a car that he had a hand in putting together is wonderful. Ash is very robust wood and was used on many old cars back in the day, even the Morris Minor Traveller has an ash frame which I am sure many people knew. Thanks for sharing this video Steph and I hope the chap at the end wasn't too unhappy that you 'kidnapped' him off the street!! 😁👍👍

    Steph, I guess that they positioned the steering wheel that low so you can always see the speedometer and fuel gauge. There was never a time in the video when the instruments weren't visible. That long throw gearbox reminds me a bit of the one on the 1963 Morris Mini I owned in the mid seventies. Short throw gearboxes are always less vague.

    Great video of a model I'd never known existed! Bonus fun factoid: The related Standard 10 estate was sold in North America as the Triumph 10, coz Standard hadn't been sold here in a while + the word "standard" didn't exactly lure buyers. But dealers often called it the "TR-10" to tie it to the TR-3 then on sale ... and you may still see a few survivors advertised that way today.

    • @michaelhalsall5684
      @michaelhalsall5684 2 дня назад

      Does "North America" include the US market? I know the Standard 10 (Triumph 10) was sold in Canada as I saw one in a Canadian TV show once. The Triumph "TR-10" model name makes sense in that market. Fun fact - The Standard 10 was called the Vanguard Junior in some export markets to tie it in with the larger Vanguard car.

    • @davidjones332
      @davidjones332 2 дня назад

      "Standard" is one of those words which has changed its meaning in the modern world. Nowadays it usually means the basic or no-frills version of something, but when the Standard Motor Company was founded it was understood to mean the standard to which the competition could only aspire, it was setting the standard for others to follow. In the 'Thirties it was realised that "standard" was another word for a flag, so Union Flag badges appeared on the Flying Standard models, which implied that buying a Standard was a patriotic choice.

    • @TemptingFateTours
